(Forgive me, I am hijacking your post and putting it on the rack)

It’s probably THE most notorious offender of a phenomenon that seems to affect -checks notes- Every Single Major Classic Literature Horror Story Adaptation. 

All of them. Every one.

Frankenstein adaptations throw Henry and Victor’s thing out a window and heap on the lady love interests to remind everyone that lady love is happening, look at the damsel, look! (Yes, this even includes personal favorite Universal OC, the Bride--who herself is portrayed in all ensuing merch as being the Creature’s ~willing lover~ when her 0.5 seconds of life involve her hissing in hate at him...and probably at her meta situation of being invented by men to appease a predestined male mate in fucked up Eve style, but that’s its own rant.)

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde adaptations obliterate the actual main character, Gabriel Utterson, out of existence, and any early suppositions of the ‘relationship’ between Jekyll and Hyde are tossed in favor of Hulk fantasies and lady-chasing.

The Invisible Man involves exactly two female characters--two of many comic relief cast members--with no real connection to Griffin Invisibleman, the latter spending the story alternately running around naked, having (male) strangers comment on his muscular chest, and wrestling with a former male classmate in his bed before an ultimate climax in which said man (Griffin’s most recent target) is the only voice to speak up and demand the mob back away before they kill Griffin, albeit too late. He’s turned into a dithering coward who’s killed off while a new damsel is introduced to be Griffin’s love interest. An especial thorn in the story’s side, as it’s a short story arguably devoid of any romantic interest between anyone, period. Any hint that Griffin might not be straight--read: mlm or aroace or anything in-between--has to be erased.

The Picture of Dorian Gray adaptations--TPoDG being the same novel used against Oscar Wilde when accusing him of the crime of icky evil man love--has a chronic case of Casanova-ing Dorian ‘no no really me and Wotton and Basil are super hetero bros it’s cool honest’ Gray into ladykiller oblivion. 

And then there’s Dracula.

Oh, Dracula.

Perhaps the single most aggressively ‘no homo!!!’-ed piece of literature in the history of retellings. Jonathan Harker does indeed endure two full months of nightmare bisexual time with the Count and the Brides, a canon occurrence responsible for 

1) Setting him up as one of the major protagonists and the recorder of the inciting actions for the entire fucking book, 

2) providing one of THE tightest and most dread-inducing gothic horror excerpts in literature, 

3) framing Jonathan as the only character in the entire cast who gets to hold long, repeated, psychological minefield conversations with the Count, period, 

4) framing Jonathan as the only target of the Count who the latter purposefully keeps near him for Two Months for a full Bluebeard/Beauty and the Beast-style intimacy while his other victims get the equivalent of a few hickeys before being ditched

5) foreshadowing the climax of the novel in which the killing blow is delivered with the pure perfect catharsis of the unexpected hero VS the abusive conquering villain.

And that’s not even getting into the el gee bee tee goings-on in the unofficial prequel of “Dracula’s Guest” featuring proto-Jonathan and Big Bad Wolf Dracula.

All of this being universally, immediately, constantly, ears-plugged, eyes-covered, ‘We Refuse to Acknowledge the Queer Dreams’ thrown into a burning trash compactor by every single director and writer in the past 126 years who either work directly from shitty Coppola wiki pages or outright ignore the novel’s blatant text, supposing they even bothered to skim it. 

Jonathan and his whole situation is too much of a threat, so he’s either turned into a stuffy Victorian wimp, a cheater, a divorcee, or a corpse to get him out of the way so they can make Count Fuckula fanfiction #25635 in which Dracula manfully sexily liberates Mina who is really sooo super into him as long as we ignore the book entirely.

And god damn but it is frustrating.

ngl it's certainly something that Jonathan Harker is Dracula's chew toy for months, with Jonathan narrating everything he can remember or allow himself admit experiencing in this "sea of wonders" while being the Count's said plaything, but every single book or comic cover or movie poster or series promo is Dracula menacing Half-Naked Girl

No but imagine.

They go to Ever After High for reasons. They have a good time at first, oblivious to everything. Jackson is feeling happier than he ever did at Monster High. He’s invited to parties, and they don’t say anything when he wears noise canceling headphones to block out the music! They just dance with him and type on this places version of iCoffins to talk to him! He starts making friends. He stops hiding in his room all the time and starts staying up late, not to study, but to hang out with his newfound friends.

His grades slip a little, but that doesn’t mean anything. What’s one C and two- no three B’s when he finally feels like he can be himself the way everyone at Monster High said he could be but shunned him for. Plus, this campus has a clawsome potion’s classroom that he can use. He’s actually snuck in quite a lot recently, but it’s not like anyone caught him.

Holt’s having fun too. He doesn’t feel like he’s weighed down by Jackson anymore. The nerd has stopped having such a stick up his ass and his actually letting Holt have some fun. Voluntarily, might he add! He and this girl, Piper, have even started having gigs together, combining classical with electronic.

But then Jackson would start changing into Holt without music. Holt starts freaking out because he can’t hear anything but he’s out so something must have happened to trigger him. Did their trigger change? What would it be now if not music? If not sweat or the sun?

Jackson, for his part is confused but not overly worried. At least they know of each other now, so they can figure everything out together. Jackson stops going to as many parties, in favor on sneaking into the potions class more and more to try and figure it out on his own. He even starts skipping classes but no matter what he tries, he still changes into Holt. Not only that, but the transformation itself is starting to get more and more painful. What used to feel like a warm sensation mixed with pins and needles now feels like hot rods being stabbed into him from all angles.

Holt isn’t fairing any better. The pain is the first thing he feels when he’s yanked from oblivion. It’s so bad that he can barely see, let alone stand for his first few minutes. When he does get his bearings, he’s dizzy, nauseous, and sore because he hit his shoulder on the damned table.

He cusses under his breath as he cautiously leaves the classroom. No one’s there. Good then they won’t ask any questions. He’s not in the mood to talk to people right now. His shoulder is killing him and his ears are ringing and his clothes suddenly feel too tight and that stupid, clumsy mermaid chick just bumped into him-

On instinct he shoved her away as hard as he could. The downside to this was that she wasn’t exactly steady on both her legs, causing her to fall rather painfully onto her back. Holt stood there like a dear in headlights. Why wasn’t he moving? Why wasn’t he apologizing and helping her up? Sure it was her fault for running into him but that doesn’t matter, he didn’t mean to push her.

He felt a hand grasp his bicep. When he turned he saw one of the dumb Charming kids. Daring, Holt thinks his name is. He talking, Holt can tell, but he can’t hear anything over the ringing in his ears. He looks simultaneously pissed off and concerned.

He starts to pull him, but Holt stays put. Why is he resisting? Why can’t he breathe right? He grabs at his chest, and finally follows as Daring pulls him along. He tries to ground himself by focusing on the near bruising grip the prince had on his wrist. He felt his temperature start to rise.

What happens after that is a blur. He remembers being in the principal’s office being scolded. He remembers a counselor walking in and trying to talk to him. He remembers feeling the wooden arm rests of the chair he was on scorch and splinter. He thinks he might have left footprints too, but he can’t be sure. But there is one thing he remembers with crystal clarity.

He remembers staring at a large book. There was a picture of his and Jackson’s faces on the page. Next was Jackson doing what looked to be some kind of experiment, but the flames of their transformation licked at his legs. There’s Holt again, fidgeting with a large stick. Someone sneaking up behind him and-

He stumbled away from the book, but kept his eyes locked on the scene. The book showed a hand, half of a broken stick, and a puddle of blood. The pages kept turning by themselves, faster and faster, only letting Holt catch a few glimpses of what was supposed to be his and Jackson’s destiny.

Jackson looking frantic, hunched over a table. Holt pressed up against a door. Jackson mixing something up between two test tubes. One of them sprawled out of a chair, impossible to make out through the flames.

The last picture, and the one the book decided to linger on, showed Holt. His eyes were glassy staring up at nothing. An empty bottle seemingly had called from his limp hand. There was a clear puddle of liquid on the ground.

He shakes his head and violently pushes the book away. He ran, paying no heed to the voices that called out for him.

Everything was worse after that. Some people avoided him, not wanting to be the person that Holt would end up… killing. They stopped booking him for gigs, stopped inviting him out. Others tried telling him that it wasn’t so bad. That if he didn’t he would disappear anyway. Seriously, were these kids psychopaths? Did they truly believe that he should happily go along with murdering someone and then killing himself?

Truth be told he didn’t even know if Jackson knew. He probably did, at least some of it. He was apparently worried about Holt. He hadn’t been writing in their journal or responding to his video diaries. How could he? Knowing that he would end up getting Jackson killed? It was like the Trick-or-Treatment but a thousand times worse.

He didn’t want to do this, but… what if he couldn’t stop it like some people said he could. What if he really was evil?

I'm really glad the Ever after high X Monster High crossover was only with Cupid.

Because anyone else could've made this really... Really horrific. Especially if they were pressured into following their legacies.

Holt just wants to be a DJ and now everyone's telling him he needs to kill multiple people... And than Jackson.

This would not be fun. But would definitely give more reasons to not follow your story.

The only correct soundtrack for Jekyll and Hyde is Darkside by Madison Mars followed directly by Begging by Måneskin as depicted by my head of Drama for our school’s original musical production of the book to avoid copyright.

Other excellent changes to the source material include Dr. Jekyll holding a rave at his house.

Do you have any thoughts on Jabberwock and the ghouls there?

I really enjoyed it! It makes me wonder why the house doesn't allow general students, maybe a risk factor? But if it was a risk factor, why would the school allow general students at all?

Haru's a treat, I really enjoyed meeting him, he seems to also push himself too hard. Do you think his gloved hand is a prosthetic or something similar?

I also ended up warming up to Ren at the end. I can understand why someone would be annoyed with his attitude and general asocial behavior, but I do see things from his perspective, he's like a more moody Kaito in that aspect of "I might be a ghoul, but I'm still just a normal guy. I didn't ask for any of this, I'm not built to go through this kind of stuff" way of thinking. But I also appreciate that he will do something when the going gets tough, as long as he's allowed to complain about it, lol. He has a different way of showing that he actually does care and I do really like that about him.

I also want to see him and his relationship with Towa evolve. I kind of already had a feeling that Towa wasn't a big Ren fan towards the beginning, neither person understands the other it seems, and it makes me want to see what Ren's thoughts are about Towa. Towa calls Ren an interloper, so it's obvious that he doesn't think that Ren belongs there, and Ren would probably agree, but then I remember what Kaito said in the prologue about Jabberwock needed someone grounded, someone to tell them when one of their ideas are kinda dumb or they're doing too much. That's why I also believe that when Ren does become a second year, he won't actually want to transfer houses anymore. I think he'll warm up to the house, Haru and Towa.

My apologies, my plan was to discuss all of Jabberwock but it turned into a Ren rave session!

A couple things of note~

Jabberwock did have general admission students at one point, Kaito tells us at the school administration only stopped this recently. This makes me think that something occurred during the clash that made them deem the house unsafe, perhaps something to do with Towa since the school feels the need to be "careful with him."

Actually while I am talking about Towa, I have this thought... crack conspiracy theory if you will since I have next to no evidence for it but just hear me out- What if he wasn't always human? Animals becoming human is a common theme in myths, he could have wished on his demon to become human, and if he was maybe some sort of powerful anomalous creature it would explain his ability to "control" them... and why it's different from his stigma which appears to be controlling weather. And why he loves Haru so much! All the anomalous creatures do! And why he eats flowers and why his blood type is unknown and his obsession with romance because he probably finds it a bit silly and why he hugs MC after she says she thinks anomalous animals aren't so different than people and-

Anyway I got Jabberwock in my little dorm test at the beginning (they were always going to be my boys, for better or worse) and during that sorting Hyde specifically says "Interesting, so you value trust, huh? You're caring and loyal in all your endeavors." So when I saw Ren get sorted into Jabberwock that's what I immediately thought about. Ren appears to be filling our gamer/otaku trope in the roster, so seeing him as someone who values trust isn't really hard for me. He probably was thinking about how he wanted people he could be himself with, and while Haru and Towa are certainly out there that's not beyond them to do. If anything they seem like the most accepting people in the whole school, their little group really does feel like a family. It's nice.

I hadn't actually thought much about Haru's gloved hand since one glove on and one glove off isn't exactly uncommon (Ace Trappola Twisted Wonderland only wears one in his school uniform cards) but I went back and checked the available card art in the game just in case I had missed something. Haru always wears two gloves unless he's in his casual outfit, where he has just the one or his sprite after being injured where he has his gloved hand and then his bandaged one. I don't have an sr or ssr of him so I can't set him to my homescreen to check what his Nightmare Raid sprite would be, but since Tohma is still wearing his monocole for that idk if I would say that counts as evidence. It could be that he has a prosthetic of some sort, he is always over working himself so I could see him injuring his hand to the point where he needs one? But I am uncertain if he has one now.

I think a lot of my opinion about Ren and his social aversions sort of comes from my own thinking about my anxiety disorder... simply put it is not healthy for humans to spend as much time alone as Ren is trying to and even if it drains you, you need to push yourself to interact with people face to face. Not just online. It's work, ugly hard work but you have to do it so seeing him interact with Haru and the animals and just try. It makes me so proud of him I really want to see where he goes from here.

I don't think anyone's pointed it out yet, but I think he might know Sho. He refers to him in his thoughts as "that burn out" and constantly hides from interacting with him. He is also VERY AFRAID of the water, specifically sea water, which makes his efforts to save Calamari just that much more admirable. Sure, he complained the whole time, but he fought his own fears to save the life of an animal because he is caring and loyal and god I was so proud of him!!!! Go Ren!!!! I agree that I don't think he'll leave in his second year, he's a lot more "normal" than Haru and Towa are but still just crazy enough to fit in to their little group. They really do need him, and I'm sure he will realize that he needs them too after a while.

Towa has difficulty communicating in general due to his non verbal nature (as a side note, this seems to be tied to time of day. he's been chilling on my homescreen and he stays non verbal until around sometime between 3-5 est??? Which according to my brief google search is around 4-6 am jst... I need to pay closer attention) he seems to try and give flowers to communicate? Of the flowers he has given out, wolfsbane symbolizes misanthropy? "A dislike of human kind" so I think he is using that to say "I don't like you D:<" to Haru when he is chilling injured on the couch. He both calls and gives MC a dandelion, which symbolizes "hope, healing, and resilience" and you could also point out how some people see it as a weed despite it being a very useful plant. And in his homescreen lines he gives MC a five leafed clover (good luck) and cherry blossom petals (death, beauty, and violence). He says he keeps some petals in his memory box? And seems to expect you to eat them so it could be nothing but the idea of him with an angry pout collecting plants just to say "harumph. i don't like you right now ୧(๑•̀ᗝ•́)૭" is just too cute.

Back to his and Ren's relationship though, I think he probably sees Ren as annoying in the same way a particularly bratty child does a new younger sibling. It used to just be him and Haru but now there's this new kid that Haru is putting a bunch of time into and that means less time with him! Also it probably doesn't help that he slacks on his chores around the dorm. The book 3 mission seems to have helped bring them together a little bit, so I am looking forward to when we hear from them again.

Fearbook Friday Week 4: Holt Jekyll-Hyde.

Holt is above determined above all else to be the life of the party, a globetrotting DJ sensation! if it wasn't for his dour, stick in the mud brother... A half oni-half human boy from Liverpool,England. Holt is one of the great-grandsons of the infamous Henry Jekyll, and as a result of his half-monster heritage the "family curse" as affectionately put manifests way differently to his mother or grandmother, resulting in holt sharing his body with his twin brother Jackson and control over their body switching on the beat,literally! Exuberant,social,streetwise and always down to throw the most clawsome gig,rave or get together, Holt has struck up a close friendship with Frankie Stein since they started Monster High, determined to show the simulacrum all the best stuff about being alive, if only Jackson would stop giving snarky asides in his head whilst doing so!

Week fours entry to Fearbook Fridays is Holt! Holts always been one of my favorite characters despite the fact that Mattel basically forgot about him, to remedy that here he's part of the central cast and frankie's closest friend, he and his brother sort of being a compliment to their social and scientific sides respectively. (And Frankie as a bit of a straight monster and mediator between the two when they get too argumentative)

Also I've changed up the way he and jacksons dynamic works, being not only aware of each other but "backseat driving" as it were when one or the other is in control. (I think a good comparison is how Venom and Eddie Brock work in those movies) I like to imagine they get on each other's nerves a lot with plenty of snippy asides and typical sibling bickering.

Anyways, see you next Friday for the other brother to inhabit holts shared body...

jay : avid fan of the california cherry geek bar!!!! he isn’t too picky about the flavor though, just the brand. he is all about the “told bro we geek hard” life n his first pick will always be a geek bar

jake : i see him puffing on HYDE RAVES 😭😭😭 gets stupid flavors like disgusting brazmallows, summer luv or honeydew punch. the sillier the name, the more likely he is to try it. he likes hyde raves for the colorchanging lights when you hit them, but his favorite is probably the disgustingly sweet orange creamsicle geek bar.

sunghoon : now this one’s tricky!!! but if i were to choose a flavor for him i’d say cranberry grape elf bar!! he seems like a blue / purple flavor dude, maybe blue razz ice or something along those lines.

Little cousin AU

Aka Heath Burns is canonically cousins with Jackson Jekyll and Holt Hyde.

And this is just a whole ass AU where their all just close and Heath being a protective older brother figure to them both.

Family backstories in this AU.

Heath's mother is Abigail Burns née Blake and his father is James Burns.

Jackson and Holt's mother is Cyra Jekyll née Blake and their fathers are Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde.

Abigail and Cyra are sisters.

They are both fire elemental monsters.

The Blake sisters were infamous at Monster High when they attended.

Cyra was wicked smart, she was a spit fire who never took shit from no ghoul.

Abigail was a trickster, she was more mellow back than but she fought every fight to win.

Their parents were never around for either for them, so far caught up in their own lives they forgot they had children.

The Blake sisters were as thick as theives and they were trouble.

And trouble always has a way of finding trouble.

Henry Jekyll was a rather odd kid, a new student who was originally from Londoom.

He was a normie who had ancestry with monsters.

And had wanted to see if he could awaken his heritage.

... And he did a lot more than that.

Edward Hyde came into creation.

It took a time for the two to co-exist peacefully but from their they were inseparable.

Henry and Edward were both ostracised at Monster High.

Considered neither normie nor monster.

But made an unlikely friend in James Burns, head of the Casketball team.

Who had asked if Henry would be open to tutoring him as he was failing Clawculus.

Henry, reluctant but agreed and the two ended up becoming good friends.

James would continue to look out and talk to Henry, even turning on his own team when he found them bullying him.

Few people wanted to mess with the guy who's self proclaimed body guard was a powerful fire elemental and one of the best Casketball players in the school.

Edward was suspicious of James in the beginning but they too would become good friends.

James didn't gave any family, he was an orphan and the three of them were a lot like brothers.

So much so, James would tease Henry and Edward on their crush on Cyra Blake.

They were academic rivials, competing head to head for test scores and grades.

Little did the duo know Cyra had a crush on them.

Abigail ends up meeting up with James, knowing he's Henry and Edward's best friend and the two make plans to set their siblings up.

Their meddling proves to be successful, and in doing so they end up getting to know each other.

And falling for each other.

The group were close, becoming a family to each other and riding out on a high for the rest of their time at Monster High.

But things weren't the same after graduation.

James was kicked out of the orphanage once he turned 18.

Cyra and Abigail's parents had left them the house and moved to Sacris.

Henry and Edward were disowned from their normie family.

They saw Edward as unnatural, as a disgusting monster who had possessed their dear Henry.

Unable to accept that Henry and Edward were both good people, a human and a monster co-existing.

Abigail and Cyra bought their boyfriends to their house. Living together for the first few years after graduation while everyone tried to pick themselves up move on.

Cyra, Henry and Edward eventually moved out.

Abigail and James married.

And a few years later as did Cyra, Henry and Edward.

Henry was on track to be a doctor, Edward was a writer. Cyra was in university to become a lawyer.

Abigail became a lab technician and James was working as a chefs apprentice.

It could have all ended their, that could have been their happily ever after.

But tragedy struck years later.

The group were having a picnic at a local park. Henry was pushing Heath and Jackson on the swings.

Heath was around 5 and Jackson who was turning 4 soon.

Edward switched with Henry to push the kids.

However, a group of normies saw. People who were close to Henry's parents.

And had heard all about their rants and ravings to everyone who would listen that their beloved son Henry had been possessed by monsters.

And had followed them here, and we're only further angered seeing the normie looking Jackson "in his wicked clutches."

Edward was attacked by normies trying to "cleanse him" his friends jumped into help but it was an ambush.

By the time they were able to get to Edward, now Henry he was gone.

The normies cheered that they had freed him, before running off in terror at James, fully flamed out as a giant monster roaring and yelling.

They tried to get Henry to a hospital but it was too late.

Cyra was heartbroken, James never fully recovered losing his best friend. And it was Abigail who got everyone back home safely and took charge.

Arranging the funeral, encouraging her sister to move back in with them and holding both of their hands as they all mourned their beloved friends.

Heath, already protective over Jackson and Holt took it upon himself to look after and protect them. They were his cousins, his little brothers now.

Jackson doesn't remember the whole incident but he and Holt wouldn't leave Heaths side for a long time.

Only seperated when Heath headed to Monster High but joined him soon enough.

Unfortunately the normies involved were never charged and got off scot free.

Cyra moved across the street from her sister and James, though they have all remained close.

They all carry Henry and Edward's deaths and raised their kids as siblings more than cousins.

Heath remains a protective older brother and in time and with therapy Jackson and Holt were able to find their footing and shine.
